Differences in Graduation Rates

The official four-year graduation rate for students attending public colleges and universities is 33.3%. The six-year rate is 57.6%. At private colleges and universities, the four-year graduation rate is 52.8%, and 65.4% earn a degree in six years.

Those given graduation rates are not as accurate as they want you to believe. They're highly misleading due to the calculations being based off of full time students that graduate from a specific college, rather than including part-time students and transfer students as well. What about the students that didn't get the chance to graduate at all? In my opinion, many of those who left college early were students who just weren't ready for college or decided college just wasn't for them. I believe their reasons for leaving have to do with either money issues, just being burnt out on education, or not having any direction.

Financial Issues

As we all know, college is one of the more expensive luxuries of life. Not very many people have the money to attend even a year of college, much less graduate from it. Although, while loans are an option; no one wants to be stuck in debt for the rest of their lives and financial aids can only get one so far before they have to start paying out of pocket. College is a necessity for almost anyone wanting to chase their dream careers, but sadly not everyone has that opportunity. Due to this very common situation, people will drop out of college which results in changing a school's graduation rate.

Academically Unprepared

It's not unheard of for people to drop out of college due to not wanting to deal with another 4+ years of school. After dealing with a full 12 years of school, it's understandable for anyone to just be burnt-out on education. Many just accept the fact that there are other paths in life one can take, with only their high school diploma, and realize it'd be easier for them to follow those paths than to struggle through college. Due to the people that end up leaving because of this mindset; graduation rates are affected.

No Direction

Imagine how much easier it would be if college could just plan out the rest of ours lives for us; sadly, that's not the case. It's hard for anyone that is unsure of what they're even there for; other than having constantly been told that "college is needed to have a successful life". Many just attend college due to that pressure of thinking they'll be unsuccessful without it. It's understandable to not be sure of what it is one wants to do for the rest of their lives and to not know right away; it's stressful. Although, leaving a college early because of this predicament is what can cause differences in a college's graduation rate.
